So it’s 710am and the kids are are still asleep – I’ve been up since 630am trying to get my day kick started in the best possible way! Cue coffee 😉 Ha, there’s more to it than that…..read on.
I’ve been asked on a number of occasions about our daily schedule, how we fit everything in, how I manage to get everything done and so over the next wee while I’m going to try to share how we do that?! I’m not sure I have any great secrets or anything that will be new to you or what you don’t already do, but perhaps someone out there will find it useful! Here’s hoping anyhow. If not, I figure it’ll help me to fine tune my day again.
So, what better place to start than at the very beginning of the day….”Let’s start at the very beginning, it’s a very good place to start….” any other Sound of Music fans out there?! For a while now, (around 5 months), I have been getting up EARLY, and boy has it been tough going I have to admit. A friend from University days who had recently been brought back into my life via Making Memories in the Chaos on Facebook – doesn’t God work in the most amazing ways?! – challenged me to get up early in the morning and spend quality time with God before doing anything else, we said we would keep each other accountable with a text message. And, IT….HAS…..CHANGED…….MY……LIFE. Not exaggerating. Not being over dramatic. It has totally changed my life. It hasn’t been easy, there have been days when I have snoozed on, but on the whole I have made it…..the text message thing really helped! So, go on….if you have a friend who you could do this with I would totally encourage you to give it a try, or I’m hoping to start a 630am club in September, which will be an online group for encouraging each other on this journey – watch this space! Let me know if you’d be interested in joining 😉
Since making the commitment to get up early, God has confirmed time and time again that this is needed if I am to do ‘my job’ most effectively. My alarm goes at 615am and I make sure it is loud so that I quickly turn it off and am not tempted to ‘not hear’ it 😉 I want to get that bad boy knocked off ASAP as I do not want to wake the kids! So, it is on MAX volume and sitting across the room – you should see me leap some mornings 😉 It ain’t pretty. After that it’s a 5 min blast in the shower (on the days I’m not washing my hair, if I’m washing my hair I’m up a bit earlier!!) and a 5 min throw on of some clothes….I tidy myself up a bit later in the morning. Then I sneak past the bedrooms and into the living room. Most mornings I will put on a load of laundry before I get stuck into my time with God, then by the time breakfast is over later it’s ready to be hung out or into the tumble dryer depending on the weather.
No one puts it better than John Piper – “I earnestly recommend that Bible reading and prayer be early in the morning…..entering the day without a serious meeting with God, over HIs word and in prayer, is like entering the battle without tending to your weapons. The human heart does not replenish itself with sleep; the body does, but not the heart. We replenish our hearts not with sleep, but with the Word of God and prayer”. And we mummy’s NEED the Lord to have success in the job that He has called us to. The task is just too great without Him. The battle is too much on our own. There is so much more I could share with you on what God has been saying to me about that, but I don’t wanna write a huuuuuuuuuggggggggee post, so I’ll save that for another day. Oh and mummy or not, whatever God has for you right now – at home or at work, or school or uni, you need your weapons!
After this I have a wee think over what my plans are for that day – what I’d like to get done in terms of housework, what I’d like to get done with the kids / where we’re going that day. I have a daily schedule which is kind of planned out hour by hour!!!!! It’s the teacher in me, I actually have a timetable! What can I say I loved school – I still love school!!! I can hear so many of you snigger/sigh/snort in disgust!! Ha ha! I was probably one of those people you hated!!
I honestly cannot encourage you enough to try this out! I know it ain’t easy and I know for some it genuinely isn’t possible. BUT, if you can – get up before the little ankle snappers – meet with the Lord – you’ll be glad you did.
