According to the Oxford dictionary;
Lent : (in the Christian Church) the period preceding Easter, which is devoted to fasting, abstinence, and penitence in commemoration of Christ’s fasting in the wilderness. In the Western Church it runs from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday, and so includes forty weekdays.
Now, I have never actually observed Lent. Never! Is that bad?! It probably is, BUT I am going to this year, so it’s ok 😉 I know, usually, people give up things like chocolate and crisps or all things junk, but for me I’ve decided to give up social media i.e. Facebook and Instagram.
It has come to my attention that I am spending far too much time on both and I’m a little disgusted with myself. It’s the first thing I check the minute I wake up and the last thing I check at night. If I am at a loose end, my phone will be the first thing that I lift and scroll through. If I’m waiting at the doctors / dentist or at the school gate I will get out my phone and see what I have missed.
And to be quite honest I am not happy about that! So I am taking a break from it. I also won’t be posting on here as often, but will pop up a little post from time to time. One of the things that I used to love about going to Uganda was the freedom that I experienced when I was out there. We were encouraged to just leave our mobiles at home, and it was great! And that was before my phone had Instagram and Facebook on it, so I can’t even imagine the freedom that I will experience during these 40 days! I am hoping it’s going to be quite liberating. Maybe I’ll hate it though?! I do enjoy keeping in touch with friends and bloggers on social media, I enjoy it a lot. We’ll see…..
Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, so I have about 36 hours left of checking up on what’s going on in the land of IG and Facebook! I better make it good 😉 If you follow me there, I guess I’ll see ya on the other side….’til Easter Saturday y’all…….xxxxx
